Frequently asked questions

  • What types of accommodation can I expect on this tour?

The tour includes 7 nights on a sailboat with 5 twin/double bed cabins and 5 bathrooms, 5 nights in hotels, and 2 nights in an Eco Lodge.
  • What are the specific sleeping arrangements and space considerations on the sailboat?

Rooming is assigned upon arrival, and specific cabins cannot be guaranteed. You will share a bunk or double bed with a travel partner or a fellow passenger of the same sex, and bathrooms are shared. Space onboard is tight as it's a real sailboat, not a cruise vessel, with sleeping quarters minimized to maximize public space. Opportunities to sleep on the main deck are often available.
  • Are there limitations on fresh water and electrical power on the sailboat?

Fresh water is limited, and showers are restricted to one quick shower per person per day. Electrical outlets are European style (240V, 2 pins) and only operational while in port. It's recommended to bring an external battery pack for personal electronics, especially for medical devices like Sleep Apnea/CPAP machines, as a constant power source cannot be guaranteed.
  • What physical fitness level is required for this tour?

This trip has a physical rating of 2. You should be able to climb small steep ladders, walk over a wooden plank without a handrail when boarding/disembarking, and physically carry your luggage. You will also frequently climb in and out of inflatable tenders at beach landing spots and move around the yacht while it sails in waves, which can be challenging.
  • What kind of participation is expected from guests during the sailing portion?

The sailing portion is self-catering, and all participants are expected to help with keeping the boat tidy, including cleaning up after themselves, washing dishes, and emptying bins when ashore.
  • What meals are included in the tour?

The tour includes 7 breakfasts, 2 lunches, and 1 dinner.
  • How does dining work during the sailing week?

On the sailing trip, the Skipper CEO will organize a food kitty, typically around €70 per person per week, to cover small food items onboard such as breakfasts, lunches, and snacks, as well as an occasional dinner. Most dinners are taken ashore at local restaurants.
  • What is the role of the Chief Experience Officer (CEO) / Skipper?

The Skipper/CEO is with the group throughout the journey, responsible for sailing, onboard safety, and vessel safety. They provide orientation walks, suggest activities and dining, and offer general knowledge of the islands. They may also ask for help onboard and share sailing knowledge. Please note, they are unable to legally share historical facts in public places; local guides cover this.
  • What are the age requirements for this trip?

You must be 18 to travel unaccompanied. Minors aged 12 and above may travel with a guardian who is at least 21 years old.
  • What is the maximum group size for this tour?

The maximum group size is 16 travelers, with an average group size of 12.
  • Is travel insurance required for this trip?

Yes, travel insurance is compulsory. It must include medical coverage with a minimum of USD 200,000 for repatriation and emergency rescue. Coverage for personal liability, cancellation, curtailment, and lost luggage/personal effects is also strongly recommended.
  • What currency should I use, and how should I handle money?

Euros (EUR) are accepted everywhere. You can withdraw money from ATMs upon arrival. It is advisable to exchange currency at banks or Bureaux de Change rather than hotels, which often have poor exchange rates.
  • How much spending money should I budget for optional activities and personal expenses?

Spending money varies by individual habits, but guests should expect to spend anywhere from €30 to €80 on optional activities per day, depending on interest and local conditions. It is also recommended to have up to €300 in cash, as not all restaurants accept credit cards.
  • What transportation methods are used during the tour?

The tour utilizes a 16m (52 ft) sailing yacht, other boats, private buses, 4x4 vehicles, and walking.
  • Do solo travelers have to pay extra for their accommodation?

No, single travelers are paired in twin or multi-share accommodation with someone of the same sex for group trips, meaning there is no single supplement.
  • What are the main highlights of this trip?

Highlights include walking the historic corridors of Diocletian’s Palace in Split, exploring Korčula (the birthplace of Marco Polo) and the medieval streets of Podgorica, taking in the beauty of Mljet and Biogradska Gora National Parks, sailing Croatia’s coast, and soaking up the Bay of Kotor by boat.
  • Are there any important rules of conduct I should be aware of?

Illegal drugs are not tolerated, and their possession or use will result in expulsion. The exploitation of sex-workers is also against the tour's philosophy of respect towards local people.
  • Can the itinerary change due to unforeseen circumstances?

Yes, the itinerary may need to change due to inclement weather conditions. This decision is made solely at the skipper's discretion, prioritizing the safety of the group and the yacht.
  • Where can I do laundry during the trip?

Laundry facilities are offered by some hotels and harbours for a charge. It is suggested to bring non-polluting/biodegradable soap if you wish to do your own laundry. Your CEO can advise on local options.
  • What is Planeterra?

Planeterra International Foundation is a non-profit organization that turns travel into positive impact by helping local communities earn income from tourism. They connect underserved communities to tourism benefits by developing and supporting small, community-owned businesses.
  • What about tipping?

Tipping is customary in Europe; generally 10% for wait staff and €1-2 for other service providers. For local guides, €3-5 per day is recommended, and for the CEO, a minimum of €10 per person per day is suggested as an expression of satisfaction.
  • What are the general safety and security guidelines?

It is recommended to use a neck wallet or money belt for valuables and leave expensive jewelry at home. Many hotels have safety deposit boxes. Lock your luggage. Your CEO can amend the itinerary for safety. Exercise good judgment during free time and stay in small groups or take taxis at night. Avoid protests. Participate in water-based activities only when accompanied by a guide, and swimming is at your own risk.
  • What are the health considerations for this trip?

You should consult your travel doctor for up-to-date medical information. Bottled water is recommended in some remote Croatian islands. Be prepared for seasickness if sensitive. Consider heat waves from June to October. Carry a First Aid kit and personal medical requirements. If medication needs refrigeration, bring a cooler pack as onboard power for fridges isn't always guaranteed, and constant power for sleep apnea/CPAP machines is not available (a battery pack is required).
  • What are the visa and entry requirements for my trip?

All countries require a valid passport with a minimum of 6 months validity. It is your responsibility to check with your local embassy or consulate for the most up-to-date visa requirements. As of 2025, various European countries are introducing ETIAS travel authorization for visa-exempt nationals, which you should check in advance.
